I have had the worst luck with milk up here. Seriously. I really don't even like milk. Cereal and baking- that is it. But I always seem to get spoiled milk.
The first time I ordered milk on foodmail the boys at first air came to my house to drop off my boxes and they hand me a box that is gushing milk out the bottom onto my door step. It was summer and my steps smelled like rotten milk all week. And milk at the stores.... I buy my thing of milk, bring it home and it last two days and is bad. And I usually discover it is bad after I pour it on my cereal. It never lasts to its due date. Or it is bad as soon as I open it! Especially in summer. So I took to opening the milk at the store and smelling it. Even if it smelled good it never seemed to last for long.
So I have only been buying UHT milk. UHT stands for ultra-high temperature, it comes in tetra packs, and it is good for months. So when you open it, it isn't rotten! Hurray!
Here is my tetra pack of milk:
And check out that due date! February 2008! So it can sit on my shelf until I need it!

Very smart. They have the tetra paks at the store also. I always buy my milk on the day it comes in (one of the benefits of working at the Northern is knowing when the fresh milk arrives). When we move to our next store if it's not a road store I am SOO stocking up on those!
One question though - how long does it last AFTER you open it?
How cow woman! I just put that post up and you were there reading it! You are quick!
Since they are only 1L, I only have them in the fridge for a few days until they are empty. So I am not too sure how long they will last!
And you know, even on the days when I get the milk the day it arrives it is still bad. I think since it is flown up on a plane with no refridgeration and can sit outside for a while it has so many opportunities to go bad. Winter is usually better, but not always!
Ah, progress/technology. Back in the stone ages (according to my kids anyway) when we lived up there, my folks ended up doing the powdered milk thing, since the milk was just too blasted expensive.
Powdered milk is HEINOUS. Foul loathsome stuff. It was such a treat when we got the "real" milk.
ahaha I know what you mean! I will used powdered milk in cooking, but I am not too fond of drinking it!!
So what you are telling me is that I shouldn't move up to the high arctic because I need milk to live? I have had a few milks bashed up in my food mail, and apparently the milk at the store has a store flavor, but I survive. I however couldn't make it with box milk! But good for you, a real trooper!
Kara, that is fricken classic. Believe it or not, that is what we have at our office for our coffee. It sit in our cupboard for months at a time. I have had it in my coffee and it makes me want to hurl. I feel for you and I feel your pain. I am sorry you cannot get real milk. :(
Thank you so much for your explanation. Deiss showed me your email - no I do not have a blog; but my profile is public. I really do not have the time to keep up with a blog; but I will ask Deiss for your blog site and start reading.
Cheers.

So, what does it taste like? Is there any difference? I may have to buy one at the store and try for myself.
You know, I don't find it any different. My cereal still tastes the same. Husband however does not like it. But he would rather that than bad milk. I don't know why our stores are so bad at keeping milk fresh.
u know in malaysia, the milk are almost always flavoured, vanilla being the most common, so when i came to canada, the milk just tasted weird. so i drink powder milk, they tend to taste nasty when i am not pregnant and taste great when i am pregnant, i am not sure how that works out! Frank hates the milk in malaysia since it has "no milk" taste but vanilla.
avarayna is drinking cow's milk now at least once a day so we end up buying 4L homo milk. its gone by 2 - 3 weeks and usually stays good in the fridge. Frank bought a 2L chocolate milk 2 days ago and the exp date said Nov 5, but when he drank it, it was rotten and i tasted it, it was so nasty! the fridge must have went down that week!
