Looks like it's a go!

Well good news folks!

Rumour has it tonight that the plebiscite has passed with a 66% yes vote to have a liquor committee in Kugluktuk to restrict the flow of alcohol. I hope that this will have a positive impact on my community and that we will see change. There was a comment on my last post stating that the young generation here is the one that will bring on change and I agree.

For those who saw tonights special on CBC the National please share your thoughts. I was very impressed with the show. So many times over shows paint an all to rosy picture of the Arctic and do not show the true issues. The special tonight did a good job of showing the some of the problems here in Kugluktuk. I do wish the CBC had talked a bit more about the social problems here in town. I was dissapointed that there was no mention about the drug and gambling addictions here in town that are destroying families as well. I usually do not discuss any of these problems on our blog because we want to share the positive in our lives. But I would like to to hear from those of you in other communities or those of you from the south.

I just hope that there is change in town. It is needed.

That's awesome to hear! Now, if the kids and the community can keep the momentum on this, it has every chance of succeeding.

Btw, I usually sign in with Bokeh, but decided to try my hand at word blogging for a change...

Your community now has to worry about stopping the budding veins of bootlegging.

Oh they veins aren't budding- they are bulging! The bootlegging was already bad and I am not too sure how they will work to curb it.

That will be the problem. Bootlegging is a big problem here, and this is a controlled community. Though, to be honest, I'm not sure how "controlled" it is because all you need is a vehicle or 20.00 to take the bus and you get get into yellowknife and buy what you want. I sat up last night and watched the special. How corny am I. We were both dropping from exhaustion and I had the DVR set up to tape it, but I wanted to watch it live like everyone else, not recorded this morning. It was cool to think that when we were watching it, others like you guys were watching the same thing at the same time.

No cable so I missed the show, but I caught some highlights online.
We celebrated in our office this morning for you guys when we got the release about the plebiscite!
There are bootleggers here too, even with the bars and easy permits.
I always think what is needed is better cooperation from the airlines, to stop people from bringing in 40s of booze in their carry-ons. I understand it's a charter of rights issue, that they can't really search people, but too bad they can't implement something a bit different, given the seriousness of the impact. Obviously my totally unqualified opinion!

I agree Kate! Also, when you fly to Kugluktuk, none of your luggage is screened and there is no security. I think it would be nice to see something better set up. What makes me mad is when our foodmail is left in Yellowknife and booze is brought up instead.

I had a chance to see the CBC story last night and was very pleased to hear of the positive result. As a teacher its refreshing to see youth presented in a positive light for a change.

watched it in my hotel room, though ours is a dry town, there are some odd drinking cases. not really much of an issue like gambling and drugs. we used to live in front of a guy who was a "drug dealer", it was scary.

i thought it was a great show though the shameful part is how the kids are educating the parents. but i think the kids there are perhaps a little more responsible than the kids down here, or maybe its just tv.

i dont understand though when they had the hamlet banned alcohol for a month, everything was better until they resume operation. apparently the ppl are not happy with it but they did however "lived" without alcohol for a month. i wonder if the hamlet or RCMP has much power in the north at all?

I too wish there could be more open discussion about the social issues faced in the north, on our blog and within our community. It is a sensitive issue and one that must be approached at just the right angle so as not to offend or create a "them" and "us" situation. The few times we have written about anything negative or remotely sensitive, we have gotten into some hot water over it.
